Network Rail's national centre, Milton Keynes, (spec: Green Roof)

"Rock is currently working with BAM on the construction of Network Rail's new national centre in Milton Keynes. Previously the site of the National Hockey Stadium, the new building has been designed to promote sustainability. Rock is supplying a green/brown roof which will be self-seeding to support diverse habitats for flora and fauna. In addition, rainwater is to be collected for use in flushing toilets so that the building will use a third less water than one reliant on traditional water supplies.

Hot melt was initially specified to insulate the roof of the Network Rail centre. However, during construction BAM decided that because the green roof was to be such an important feature it was worth allocating a larger budget so that it could be enhanced further by Rock's mastic asphalt. According to Chris Dent, commercial director of BAM, "the superior resilience of asphalt backed by Rock's lifetime warranty makes it, to my mind, the logical choice for any green roof system."
