Birmingham New Hospital (spec: Mastic Asphalt)

Perhaps the thing the strikes you first about Birmingham New Hospital is its remarkable design, which resembles three giant truncated pods connected by walkways and set upon a two-storey base. Each pod overlooks a huge landscaped roof terrace, which features waterproofing technology and finishes supplied by Rock. This project, one of our largest for the healthcare sector, is the first new general hospital in Birmingham for 70 years and the UK's largest community healthcare development outside London.

Once again, Balfour Beatty has chosen Rock as a partner to help ensure the success of this prestigious £230m scheme. Much depends on the quality of Rock's work because the roof terraces are such a central feature of the whole project, which has already won several awards, including a Sustainability Award from Constructing Excellence in the West Midlands.

Construction work is being carried out as a joint venture between Balfour Beatty and Haden Young. Final completion is due in 2012, when the hospital will accommodate over 1,300 beds along with world-class teaching, training and research centres.
